At a time when South Africa continued to grapple with recurring xenophobia debates, one of its biggest cultural exports is bringing Africans together instead of driving them apart – ‘The Polygamis’, a Netflix adaptation of Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi’s self-published novel, has emerged as one of the streaming platform’s biggest non-English TV hits, attracting millions of viewers within days of its release.

The 22-episode South African drama debuted on Netflix on June 12, amassing 19.1 million viewing hours and securing the No. 4 spot on Netflix’s global non-English TV chart in its first week. The series has also topped streaming charts in South Africa and Nigeria, highlighting the growing appetite for African stories that transcend borders.

Originally overlooked by traditional publishers, Nyathi’s novel has found a global audience through Netflix, proving that compelling African storytelling can resonate far beyond its country of origin. Blending family drama, betrayal and social commentary, The Polygamist explores wealth, power, gender dynamics and the complexities of modern African families. Its fast-paced, telenovela-style format has made it a favourite among binge-watchers. The show’s success also reflects Netflix’s continued investment in African productions, with viewers embracing stories rooted in local cultures but driven by universal themes.

For many observers, the timing is significant and the reason is not far-fetched. While political and social tensions occasionally threaten relationships between African countries, entertainment continues to demonstrate the continent’s shared cultural identity. If there is a lesson from The Polygamist, it is that African stories know no borders. A Zimbabwean novel adapted in South Africa can become a hit in Nigeria and captivate audiences around the world, showing that creativity often succeeds where division fails.
