Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has urged the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to shift grounds in order to pave the way for amicable resolution of the prolonged university teachers’ strike.
The chairman of MMWG who spoke with LEADERSHIP in Ilorin, Kwara State, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi said the need for the parties involved in the crisis to shift grounds becomes necessary in view of the incalculable damage the prolonged ASUU’s strike has done to the university education system.
He said the strike has also taken its toll on the businesses of some Nigerians.
Abdullahi said that the hardline posture of ASUU and federal government cannot help matters, appealing to ASUU leadership to show more patriotism by calling off the strike since the government has accepted the new pay platform introduced by it.
He said further negotiations for better pay and fulfilment of other parts of the 2009 agreement could continue after the ASUU might have called off the strike.
Abdullahi equally asked the federal government to waive the ‘no work, no pay’ policy on this particular ASUU strike, pointing out that the matter is now delicate and cannot be resolved by any hardline stance.
He noted that ASUU’s strike is creating economic hardship for some Nigerians and it is reversing the educational gains already achieved.
