The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has urged Nigerian students struggling to pay their school fees to approach their institution’s registrar to access the Federal Government’s student loan scheme.
Yilwatda made the call while speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ on Tuesday night.
Addressing students directly, Yilwatda encouraged those facing financial hardship not to abandon their education but to take advantage of the scheme through their schools.
“If you are hearing me and you are a Nigerian student and you are having challenges with your school fees, just walk straight to your registrar’s office and put your name up,” he said.
According to him, beneficiaries of the scheme can access loans to cover their full tuition, alongside a monthly stipend to support their basic needs.
“You will access the student loan and offset your entire school fees, and you will have ₦20,000 every month for your upkeep,” Yilwatda stated.
He described the initiative as part of the government’s broader effort to cushion the effects of ongoing economic reforms on citizens.
“That’s social protection,” Yilwatda added.
He drew from his personal experience as a former lecturer to highlight the financial difficulties faced by students across the country.
“I was a lecturer. Most students in Nigeria have difficulty paying their school fees. I know of many who had to withdraw from universities because they couldn’t afford it,” he said.
He noted that beyond paying their own fees, many Nigerian students carry heavy financial responsibilities, including supporting their families and contributing to their communities.
“I know a number of them who even support their parents back home, invest in farming, and during holidays, help pay the school fees of their younger siblings in secondary schools within their communities,” Yilwatda said.
The APC chairman stressed that the student loan scheme was designed to be inclusive and accessible to Nigerians who need it.
“It’s available to anybody in Nigeria,” Yilwatda stated.
