The director-general, Forestry Rereach Institute of Nigeria, Prof Zacharia Yaduma, has charged students of Federal College of Forestry Resources Management Ishiagu (FCFRMI), to pursue academic excellence and shun social vices.
Yaduma gave the advice at the maiden matriculation ceremony of the college in Ivo local government of Ebonyi State, saying excellence in any field of endeavour is a choice one makes with the required hard work to match.
Assuring that the college had come to stay, he encouraged youths from the state in particular and the South East in general to take advantage of it to further their careers in forestry and the other courses.
Congratulating the students and the acting provost of the college, Dr Ukamaka Emeghara on the occasion, he said he was pleased with her administrative and management prowess in human capital and material resources.
Earlier, Dr Emeghara noted that the mandate of the college is to ensure sustainable environmental management through training of sub-technical and technical manpower at both ordinary and higher national diploma levels.
She said trees and forests are critical to mitigating environmental threats and climate change, hence the need for studies in forest conservation to protect the planet, biodiversity, ensure food security and resources for the future.
“The entrepreneurship department has a large number of students with the objectives of producing graduates that will be well-equipped in skills to set up their own businesses after graduation,” she added.
Highlights of the event were the inauguration of the administrative building of the college by Yaduma and the administration of Oath of Allegiance on the students by the registrar, Mrs. Chioma Ogbuji.
