The Super Eagles’ two assistant coaches, Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu, are due to arrive in Turkey today, Monday 23rd March 2026, ahead of Nigeria’s forthcoming international friendly matches against Iran and Jordan.
These fixtures are part of the team’s preparations for future competitive commitments. Both coaches have retained their positions within the national setup despite ongoing internal assessments.
However, their roles have recently faced increased scrutiny from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee. Concerns have been raised regarding the depth of experience within the current backroom staff, particularly their readiness to step into the head coach position if necessary.
A senior NFF official, speaking anonymously, told bsnsports.com that the committee is considering bringing in more experienced Nigerian coaches to bolster the technical crew alongside head coach Eric Chelle’s existing assistants.
“Neither of the current assistant coaches is seen as ready to take charge of the Super Eagles at short notice,” the official stated. “This has prompted discussions about recruiting more qualified local coaches to provide stronger technical support.”
This quote highlights the NFF’s concern about the current assistants’ readiness for a top role, prompting a search for more seasoned Nigerian coaching talent.
The NFF technical committee is expected to meet with Chelle in the coming weeks to discuss potential adjustments to the coaching structure.
Ogunmodede, who recently obtained a UEFA B coaching licence in Scotland, achieved a historic feat with Remo Stars, guiding them to their maiden Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title in the 2024/2025 season. However, the club has struggled this current campaign, leading to the appointment of former Super Eagles assistant coach Usman Abdallah as head coach.
Meanwhile, Ilechukwu continues to impress domestically, with Enugu Rangers emerging as strong contenders for the league title this season.
