The head coach of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, Justine Madugu, has expressed confidence that his team can reclaim the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title at the upcoming tournament in Morocco.

The West African giants are setting their sights on a historic 10th championship victory in the 2024 edition of the competition, which will run from 6 to 23 July.

In an interview with reporters, Madugu declared that the Super Falcons are fully prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. “We’re fully aware of our mission—‘La Decima’ or as it is popularly known here, ‘Mission X’. That’s the goal: to win our 10th WAFCON title and bring it back home,” he said, highlighting the team’s determination and focus.

The Super Falcons are seeking to bounce back following their defeat to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the last edition, which was also held in Morocco. This loss marked a significant moment in African women’s football, as it was the first time Nigeria had lost the title since the tournament’s inception. However, Madugu remains unfazed by the pressures associated with reclaiming the prestigious trophy.

“I’m not distracted by anything. We remain focused on the task ahead. Stories will fly, distractions will come, but we won’t let them derail us,” he emphasized, showing a steadfast commitment to his team’s objectives.

Beyond the pursuit of the trophy, Madugu highlighted the importance of the competition for indigenous coaches in Nigeria. “This isn’t just about us as a team; it’s also a statement for local coaches. A strong performance could open more doors for indigenous coaches in the future,” he remarked.

The Super Falcons will kick off their campaign at the WAFCON 2024 finals against Tunisia on Sunday, 6 July, in Casablanca. As anticipation builds among fans and the footballing community, the team will carry the weight of a nation’s hopes as they aim to secure yet another title and reinforce their dominant legacy in African women’s football.

With a blend of experience, skill, and strategic planning, the Super Falcons are poised to make a significant statement in Morocco, and all eyes will be on them as they embark on this arduous journey towards glory.
