Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has revealed that Nigeria will adopt a cautious approach as they begin their quest to defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.
Nnadozie, who has won the African Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award for three consecutive years, said the 10-time champions are focused on taking each match as it comes during the 2026 tournament.
Nigeria have been drawn in Group C alongside Egypt, Zambia and debutants Malawi for the competition scheduled to take place from 26 July to 16 August in Morocco.
“We will take it one match at a time because we cannot afford to stumble at any stage as a result of over-confidence,” Nnadozie told thenff.com.
“We will be focused squarely on the double targets of securing the FIFA World Cup ticket and retaining the trophy.”
The Paris FC goalkeeper also welcomed the expansion of the tournament from 12 to 16 teams, saying the increase would make the competition more challenging.
“It is interesting to have more teams at the finals. That will make the tournament more competitive, but we are calm and focused regardless of the number of teams,” she said.
Nnadozie dismissed suggestions that some groups are stronger than others, insisting that every team at the tournament deserves respect.
“Right now in Africa, there are no longer minnows. There will be a lot of surprises in this tournament as the so-called small teams will be keen to prove they are no push-overs,” she added.
“For us, we know what we are going for: the Cup and the World Cup ticket. It will not be easy but we are the Super Falcons of Nigeria.”
