Suspect Pleads Not Guilty To Charlie Kirk Murder

The man accused of killing American conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Tyler Robinson, has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and six other charges in connection with the shooting.

Kirk, 31, was speaking at an event at a university in Orem, Utah, United States, on September 10, 2025, when he was shot in the neck. His death shocked supporters and attracted widespread attention across the country.

A judge has ruled that prosecutors can seek the death penalty if Robinson is convicted. Prosecutors argued that the alleged killing involved aggravating factors, including the claim that Robinson fired into a crowd where children were present.

Robinson’s defence team had opposed the death penalty, questioning whether the evidence met the legal requirements for some of the aggravating factors cited by prosecutors.

Kirk’s widow, Erika, and his parents attended the court hearing. His family described the ruling allowing the death penalty to remain an option as an important step towards justice.

Prosecutors have presented evidence they say links Robinson to the killing. They alleged that his DNA was found on a rifle believed to be the murder weapon, as well as on a towel and a screwdriver.

Investigators also said markings on the rifle were consistent with marks found on shell casings recovered after the shooting.

The prosecution further alleged that Robinson planned the attack and had previously scouted the university campus.

Prosecutors claimed Robinson interacted with Turning Point USA members, ate at a Chick-fil-A restaurant and later returned wearing different clothes, with the rifle allegedly concealed down his trousers.

They also cited an alleged confession and a taped statement from Robinson’s roommate and romantic partner, Lance Twiggs. Prosecutors said video footage showed Robinson on campus dressed in preparation for the attack.

The prosecution has suggested that Robinson was motivated by his opposition to Kirk’s conservative views, particularly his positions on transgender issues.

Robinson’s lawyers have disputed aspects of the prosecution’s case, challenged the evidence and questioned the qualifications of some experts. They have also argued that the circumstances do not meet some of the requirements for the death penalty.

Robinson surrendered to authorities the day after Kirk’s killing.

The case is due back in court on October 23, when a trial date is expected to be discussed.
