The suspected murderer of a Lokoja, Kogi State photojournalist, identified as an officer of the Nigeria Correctional Centre in the state command, DSP Olorunpelumi Jacob has committed taken his own life.

Olorunpelumi reportedly commited suicide in a private apartment in Lokoja, the State capital.

The deceased officer gruesomely murdered the photojournalist identified as Ayo Aiyepeku by smashing a blunt object on his head which rendered him unconscious, and thereafter dismembered the victim before storing the mutilated body parts in a deep freezer.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night in an office located around the Government House/GRA axis of Lokoja, where the assailant reportedly had a farm in the same premises.

It was learnt that immediately he committed the murder, the suspect took parts of the body inside his Hilux van and sped off only to return few hours, unknown to him that a colleague of the deceased who was in the office heard the distress cry of the photojournalist when he was attacked but could not come to his rescue.

It was gathered that the correctional officer had a farm in the compound of the office of ‘Inside Story online’ a newspaper where the victim worked as a Photojournalist.

The suspect had gone to the office by 7:30 pm where he called out his victim who he thought was the only one remaining in the office before killing him in cold blood.

Olorunpelumi was said to have called the photojournalist to assist him in put a freezer in his vehicle when he hit him with a rod.

The Kogi Police Command on Wednesday said it had launched a manhunt for the suspected killer and urged members of the public who knew his whereabouts to alert the nearest police station.

However, at about 2pm on Thursday afternoon, the police, acting on a tip-off stormed into a lodge where the corpse of the suspect was recovered.

A bottle of a beverage and a another poisonous substance was said to have also been seen at the scene of the incident.

Meanwhile, sources close to the police said investigation has continued to unravel the rationale behind the suicide.
