Switzerland secured top spot in Group B and booked their place in the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada on Thursday night.

The Swiss produced a clinical second-half display to claim all three points, while Canada’s qualification hopes remained intact as they advanced to the Round of 32 after finishing second in the group.

After a cagey first half that ended goalless, Switzerland broke the deadlock immediately after the restart. Ruben Vargas fired the Europeans ahead in the 46th minute, finishing off a well-worked move orchestrated by Johan Manzambi.

The Swiss doubled their advantage just before the hour mark when Manzambi turned goalscorer. Breel Embolo provided the assist and the midfielder made no mistake, giving Switzerland a commanding 2-0 lead in the 57th minute.

Canada struggled to break down a disciplined Swiss defence for much of the contest but reignited the match with 14 minutes remaining. Promise David pulled a goal back in the 76th minute after being set up by N. Saliba, raising hopes of a dramatic comeback among the home supporters.

The hosts pushed forward in search of an equaliser and came close late on, with Liam Millar threatening in the closing stages. However, Switzerland held firm to preserve their lead and complete a perfect end to the group phase.

The victory ensured Switzerland finished at the top of Group B, underlining their status as one of the tournament’s most organised and efficient sides heading into the knockout rounds.

Despite the defeat, Canada also had reason to celebrate. The co-hosts secured second place in the group and progressed to the Round of 32, keeping alive hopes of a memorable run on home soil.

For Switzerland, the result extended their unbeaten run in the competition and provided further evidence of their attacking quality and defensive resilience. Canada, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their qualification and the fighting spirit shown in the second half as they prepare for the challenges of the knockout stage.

With both teams advancing, Group B concluded with Switzerland leading the standings and Canada following closely behind, setting up intriguing ties in the next phase of the tournament.
