Nigerian content creator Maryam Apaokagi, popularly known as Taaooma, has shared the secret behind the originality of her comedy skits, saying she draws inspiration from everyday life while being intentional about the content she consumes.
Speaking on the sidelines of the United States Mission in Nigeria’s 250th Independence Day celebration in Lagos, the award-winning skit maker admitted that she occasionally experiences creative blocks but always finds ways to recharge and return with fresh ideas.
According to Taaooma, her mother and the everyday habits of African parents remain her biggest source of inspiration. She explained that she observes their unique behaviours and adds her own creative twist to transform them into relatable comedy skits.
“It’s not like I don’t run out of ideas, but I obviously recoup and rejuvenate. One of the primary sources of my thoughts is my mother and everyday African parents, what they do and how they do things. I just take the ideas and put my own spice on them,” she said.
Taaooma also emphasised the importance of being selective about online content, noting that what people consume can shape their thinking and creativity.
“I don’t just consume any kind of content. I consume things that I know will inspire me, things that are good for my brain, not just brainwash content,” she added.
The content creator also reflected on motherhood, describing it as a positive, life-changing experience that has influenced her perspective as she continues to balance family life with her successful career in digital entertainment.
