Taraba ASUU Proceeds On Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TSU) chapter, has proceeded on an indefinite strike action, earlier suspended by the union.

The Union and the state government delegation met on January 17, 2025, and agreed to implement the union’s demands, but to no avail.

This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen in Jalingo, and signed by the Union’s Chairman, Dr Joshua Garba Mbave, on Wednesday.

The Union noted that key “grey areas” in the agreement remain unaddressed, despite several letters sent to the state government to remind it.

According to the statement, “the strike was earlier suspended in good faith to give the government adequate time to address the agreed issues.

“However, the government has failed to take concrete and verifiable steps toward fulfilling its obligations.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the reasons for the resumption of the strike hinge on the absence of a functional pension scheme for the university; the failure to pay the backlog of outstanding salaries owed to our members; the inability of the government to settle accumulated Earned Academic Allowances (EAA); and the non-implementation of the newly negotiated ASUU-FGN agreement of 2025.”

Dr Mbave further emphasised that the delay in addressing these issues has severely affected staff welfare and morale, as well as the overall functioning of the university system.

He added that the union had embarked on the industrial action as a last resort after several rounds of unsuccessful dialogue with the government delegation.
