Mercedes prodigy Kimi Antonelli continued his remarkable rise by securing a second successive pole position at the Japanese Grand Prix, edging team-mate George Russell in qualifying at Suzuka.
The 19-year-old Italian dominated the session, finishing 0.298 seconds clear despite failing to improve on his final lap after a lock-up at Turn 11.
Russell held on to second, with Oscar Piastri third for McLaren alongside Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Lando Norris took fifth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton, while reigning champion Max Verstappen will start 11th after an early exit.
Antonelli, already the youngest pole-sitter in Formula One history following his breakthrough in China, expressed satisfaction with another composed performance.
“I felt very good in the car and improved with every run,” he said.
“It’s a shame about the final lap, but the one before was strong enough.”
With just four points separating the Mercedes duo in the standings, Antonelli is emerging as a genuine title contender.
Russell, however, was left puzzled by a sudden drop in performance.
“A really strange session,” he admitted. “We were quick all weekend, but after some changes we struggled in qualifying.”
