Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, a Nigerian singer, record producer and songwriter, has become the first African female artist to have seven entries on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The Grammy-winning Nigerian made this massive milestone after her song, “What You Need”, debuted at number 93 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100, making her total entries seven.
This places her in the league of the likes of Burna Boy and South African group Seether, who each have 7 as the African artists with the highest Billboard Hot 100 entries.
Four years ago, Tems became the first African artist to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with a collaboration with Future and Drake titled “Wait For U”. This event made her more popular on the international stage.
The record producer, also featured in J. Cole’s “Bunce Road Blues” with Future, is predicted to enter the Billboard Hot 100 in the coming week. When that happens, Tems will be the first African Artist with the most entries on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
Tems became popular after appearing in Wizkid’s 2020 single “Essence”, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 9 after the release of the remix version with Justin Bieber.
