The U.S. Tennis Association announced on Thursday that participation in tennis in the United States reached a new high of 27.3 million in 2025, marking the sixth consecutive year of growth.

Interest in recreational tennis surged during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, resulting in a 54% increase in participation since 2019, according to an independent study.

Over half of the players, totalling 14.5 million, played tennis ten or more times in 2025, while 4.9 million were first-time participants, showing a 9% increase.

The USTA has set an ambitious goal of reaching 35 million players by 2035, making significant strides last year with increases in participation among women (up 10% with 1.1 million more players), Black individuals (up 14% with 450,000 more), Hispanics (up 12% with 550,000 more), and Asian/Pacific Islanders (up 10% with 260,000 more).

These figures were derived from an analysis conducted by the National Golf Foundation (NGF), based on studies by the Physical Activity Council (PAC) on Sports and Physical Activity and the PLAY Study.
