There was a melodrama on Monday as French President Emmanuel Macron paused a speaker mid-presentation at Nairobi University in Kenya, calling for silence from a noisy audience during an event linked to the Africa-France Summit.
In a now-viral video, Macron interrupted proceedings as background chatter grew louder, insisting that the audience show respect to the speaker.
“Excuse me everybody, hey hey, I’m sorry guys but it is impossible to speak about culture… with such a noise, this is a total lack of respect,” he said.
He urged attendees who wished to hold side conversations to leave the hall.
“I suggest if you want to have bilaterals or speak about something else, you have bilateral rooms or you go outside. If you want to stay here, we listen to the people and we play the same game. Thank you,” Macron added.
After he handed back the microphone, the moderator briefly responded, saying, “That’s leadership.”
Macron is in Kenya for the Africa-France summit, where leaders are holding high-level discussions on investment, culture, and cooperation between African nations and France.
LEADERSHIP reports that Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is also in attendance.
