The pilot of a small charter aircraft and three German tourists have died after a plane crash in Namibia’s renowned Sossusvlei desert region, aviation authorities confirmed on Monday.

The aircraft, a Cessna 210 operated by Desert Air, was reported missing on Sunday after departing from a private runway near Hosea Kutako International Airport en route to a private lodge in Sossusvlei, one of Namibia’s most visited tourist destinations.

Desert Air Chief Executive Officer, Willem de Wet, said the wreckage was discovered on Monday morning following a search operation.

“The wreckage of the aircraft was located around 9:15 am this morning. Unfortunately, there are no survivors,” de Wet said.

He added, “We extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident.”

According to the company, the victims’ next of kin have already been informed, while investigations into the cause of the crash were ongoing.

Sossusvlei, situated in the heart of the Namib Desert, is globally known for its towering ochre-coloured dunes and striking white salt-and-clay pan dotted with ancient dead trees, a landscape frequently featured in tourism campaigns and guidebooks on Namibia.

LEADERSHIP reports that Namibia, a former German colony, remains a major destination for German tourists. The country’s tourism ministry estimates that about 110,000 German visitors travelled to Namibia in 2024, making them the largest group of tourists outside southern Africa.
