A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has dismissed the reported suspension of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the party, describing those behind the move as “hungry” and driven by anti-democratic motives.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, Eze said the alleged suspension of Atiku and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, was carried out by what he termed a non-existent faction of the ADC in Adamawa State.

He argued that Atiku remains a dominant political figure whose influence in Adamawa transcends party affiliation, insisting that no group or individual can diminish his relevance in the state’s political landscape.

Eze attributed the development to what he described as “hunger, deprivation, and political mischief,” alleging that those responsible were acting under external influence. He also accused elements within the ruling All Progressives Congress of attempting to undermine opposition figures.

The ADC chieftain criticised the role of a factional leader in Adamawa, questioning the legitimacy of the group behind the purported suspension and dismissing their actions as baseless and lacking constitutional backing within the party.

According to him, the move was not only irregular but also a sign of desperation, warning that such actions could erode democratic norms if left unchecked. He maintained that Atiku’s political standing and grassroots support remain intact despite the controversy.

Eze further called on President Bola Tinubu to caution members of his party against interfering in the affairs of opposition parties, warning that continued political tension could have wider implications for Nigeria’s democracy.

He urged Nigerians and opposition leaders to remain resolute, stating that alleged attempts to weaken opposition voices ahead of the 2027 general elections would ultimately fail.
