Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said that President Bola Tinubu remained committed to the $25 billion gas pipeline project between Nigeria and Morocco.

Akpabio, who was represented by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, stated this at the executive session of the African Parliament in Casablanca, Morocco.

He also stated that President Tinubu would soon undertake a comprehensive review of all abandoned projects in the country to ensure their completion, placing the Nigeria–Morocco gas project at the top of the federal government’s priority list.

Akpabio said the pipeline is expected to have a capacity of 30 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year and span 5,660 kilometres.

He noted that the pipeline would traverse 13 African countries—including Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco—all relying on gas supply from Nigeria.

According to him, the project is expected to create thousands of jobs, boost industrial and digital development, and contribute to a more sustainable energy future for the participating countries.

Describing the project as a breakthrough for both Nigeria and Morocco, Akpabio said it would also enable Morocco to supply gas to European countries.

He called for the opening of the Atlantic corridor to unlock further economic opportunities.

He also urged Morocco to revise its visa policy and allow Nigerian citizens to enter without restrictions, given the level of investment and potential collaboration the pipeline would generate.

Akpabio added that the project is currently in the feasibility study and route planning phase, with ongoing discussions between relevant authorities and stakeholders. The final investment decision, originally scheduled for 2023, has now been postponed to 2025.

Senator Ibrahim further informed the gathering that the Senate President was already working to provide robust legislative support to help President Tinubu eliminate, through legal reforms, any bureaucratic challenges that could hinder the successful implementation of the project.
