In the complex tapestry of Nigeria’s socio-political history, and in the role First Ladies play in helping their spouses navigate the curves of governance, few embody the resilience, empathy, and quiet strength of Senator Oluremi Tinubu. When she turned 66 last Monday, September 21, this matriarch’s life had become a metaphor for a monumental lifetime dedicated to public service, human empowerment, and unwavering partnership in nation-building.  For a country where religion has been deployed as a weapon to divide and rule, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has created a new path in thawing religious bigotry and convincing Nigerians that Christians and Muslims can co-exist peacefully.

Dependable Ally

The First Lady’s footprint is beautifully captured in her husband’s tribute celebrating her 66th birthday, in which he described her as a life partner. To Tinubu, his wife is his “truest friend, confidante, and steadfast companion… “Through every mile, my heart has always remained at home with you. If life returned me to the beginning, I would choose the same road that led me to you.”

President Tinubu’s testament to his wife at 66 reflects not only the beautiful matrimonial bond the couple share, but also an acknowledgement of a First Lady whose quiet sacrifices have anchored the leadership shaping Africa’s most populous nation. During the dark days of military dictatorship and the relentless struggle led by the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) in the 1990s, the First Lady provided the emotional and spiritual sanctuary that helped sustain the fight for democracy. In the heat that served as a crucible, when the spotlight was absent, and danger was an everyday companion, she deployed a weapon of quiet, unyielding grace.

No Stranger To Power

Senator Tinubu’s current position reflects a masterful narrative of a woman who paid her dues in sacrifice, patience, and uncommon courage. Her resilience during these formative years cultivated the deep, cross-cultural empathy that later defined her public life. Long before assuming the position of First Lady of the Federal Republic in May 2023, her 12-year tenure in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, representing the Lagos Central Senatorial District, remains a golden era of legislative excellence and impactful representation.  She refused to follow a passive legislative path. Instead, the First Lady became a fierce, vocal, and pragmatic advocate for social justice and gender equality, among others.

The First Lady’s legislative performance appears in numerous bills and motions aimed at protecting widows’ rights, expanding access to quality education, and reforming the socio-economic framework of Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre. She broadened opportunities by pioneering the widely acclaimed Post-Secondary School Scholarship Scheme and hosting regular town hall meetings that bridged the gap between the apex of lawmaking and the grassroots.  Her colleagues in the Senate often marvelled at her ability to combine principled firmness with motherly tenderness, enabling her to champion controversial socio-economic issues without alienating her peers.

As an insider to the machinery of the state and its capacity, through constitutional tools, to uplift the downtrodden, the First Lady has realised the need to introduce structured humanitarian interventions to ameliorate the suffering of the masses. She has embraced the philosophy of philanthropy that is anchored on a profound Yoruba proverb highlighted during her birthday celebrations: ‘yàwó rere ni adé ọkọ rẹ̀’ (A good wife is her husband’s crown). Beyond serving as President Tinubu’s crown, she has chosen to be a crown of hope for the country, deploying her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) programme as a vital socio-economic lifeline complementary to the federal government’s developmental agenda.

RHI’s Interventions

Among some of her interventions are empowering Women Farmers through the provision of financial grants, high-yield seeds, and modern tools to women across the geopolitical zones to boost food security; fighting infectious diseases while expanding maternal and child health awareness campaigns; and giving wings to the academic aspirations of thousands of brilliant but indigent students through comprehensive national scholarship schemes. These selfless efforts have shown that compassion knows no artificial boundaries of tribe, region, or religion. Whether in states in the North-central region plagued by attacks or in the North-west geo-political zone, the First Lady has ensured her acts of kindness arrive with the same warmth and impartiality. As the president’s wife, Senator Tinubu has mastered a rare third way, using influential presence through quiet strength, fervent prayers, and honest counsel to support the government.

Tinubu’s revelatory statement portrays the First Lady as an essential emotional shock absorber for the presidency. In moments of intense national crisis, when policy options are tough, and the political climate is fraught with tension, her calmness, spirituality, and unwavering faith provide the balance required for clear, empathetic decision-making. Combined with this, her willingness to speak truth, truly and plainly, makes her unpopular with praise-singers and sycophants who traditionally surround power; her traditional title, the ‘Oso Di Eme I’ (supports her husband), is a deep recognition of her role in supporting her husband’s human-centric policies.

As an Ordained Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), an ecclesiastical title she has worn with humility and grace, she has refused to use her faith for political posturing. Still, she has used it as the foundational compass that drives her commitment to charity, honesty, and family values. In a nation where previous first ladies have used the position to enrich themselves, Senator Tinubu has raised children and nurtured grandchildren who continue to contribute positively to society.

Her significance as the nation’s First Lady was re-echoed when governors and top government officials saluted her quiet sacrifices and the visible triumphs she has recorded in advancing the progress of youths and providing succour to those plagued by the activities of insurgents and other criminal elements. As she moves past six scores and six years, may she continue her pursuit of peace and progress in a nation she has given and is willing to give more to improve the lives of the less privileged. Happy 66th birthday, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. May next year find you doing more for our nation!
