Tinubu Hails Team Nigeria’s 24-Medal Haul At Glasgow Commonwealth Games  

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria for its performance at the just ended 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where the country secured a total of 24 medals.

Nigeria ended its campaign with 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, a feat the President said reflected the resilience, discipline and determination of the nation’s athletes.

In a statement released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the team for representing Nigeria with honour throughout the competition.

He described the medal haul as “a testament to their hard work and perseverance,” adding that the experience gained in Glasgow would serve as a springboard for greater success in future international competitions while inspiring more young Nigerians to pursue excellence and national service.

“Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in the competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity, and pride.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I express profound appreciation to our athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators, and all those whose dedication and sacrifice made Nigeria’s participation at the Games possible,” the President said.

Tinubu also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for their efforts in advancing sports development and providing support for Nigerian athletes.

“My administration remains steadfast in its resolve to invest in sports development, strengthen our sporting institutions, improve training facilities, and create greater opportunities for our talented athletes to excel on the continental and global stage.”

The President encouraged members of Team Nigeria to remain committed to excellence as they prepare for future competitions.

Team Nigeria wrapped up its Glasgow 2026 campaign with 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze.

Although the performance was widely regarded as commendable, it fell short of the country’s record at the previous edition of the Games.

Nigeria topped the African medals table at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with 35 medals—12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze.

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia, the country won 24 medals, made up of nine gold, nine silver and six bronze. Nigeria’s strongest recent outing came at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, also held in Glasgow, where the team claimed 36 medals comprising 11 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze.
