Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering support for press freedom, describing the president as an ardent supporter of the media who understands its vital role in nation-building.

Speaking on Tuesday at the annual Blueprint Newspaper Lecture, Impact Series, and Awards held in Abuja, Idris emphasised the President’s commitment to upholding media independence.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is an ardent supporter of the media. He knows that the media is very crucial in nation-building and he has told me severally that I should go and do my job as best as I deem fit, being a professional myself,” Idris stated.

The minister further assured that the President has no intention of restricting the media, adding that the administration recognises the delicate balance between press freedom and national stability.

“President Tinubu will not in any way, form, or shape, stifle or stand in the way of the progress or the work of the media in this country. But all of us media professionals have to come together to walk this delicate path and ensure that society is being kept together while also holding leaders and government to account,” he said.

Idris highlighted the media’s pivotal role in nurturing democracy and fostering national cohesion.

He cautioned, however, that irresponsible journalism could pose risks to societal stability.

“You have an enormous responsibility to hold government and leaders to account, but even as you do that, you must be careful not to injure the society you seek to inform. Discernment is vital—knowing what is good for the country and what might cause division,” he added.

Reflecting on the state of the media, the Minister acknowledged existing challenges within the information space, but noted a sense of optimism, as the industry continues to show resilience.

Clarifying his relationship with Blueprint Newspapers, Idris said he had relinquished his position as Chairman upon his ministerial appointment, saying he attended the event purely as a guest.

“I am no longer the Chairman of Blueprint Newspaper. I haven’t visited that office in about a year now, but I’m proud and happy that what we started has continued to flourish,” he said.

He commended the award recipients at the event, stressing that their recognition was entirely the decision of the newspaper, free from any external influence.
