President Bola Tinubu has approved a new welfare policy that will provide lifetime salary benefits for senior officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above in thr paramilitary Services.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Thursday during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where he outlined the ministry’s achievements and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening institutional performance across its agencies.
In a statement signed by the NPRO/Head of Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, DCF P.O. Abraham, the minister expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his support, noting that the initiative was part of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The minister expressed profound appreciation to President Tinubu for his unwavering support, affirming that all agencies under the Ministry of Interior are reaping the benefits of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement read.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo also revealed that the ministry had cleared a long-standing backlog of promotions.
“We have successfully cleared the long-standing backlog of promotions,” he said, adding that “over 50,000 officers have been promoted within the last two years alone.”
He stressed that, henceforth, officer progression would be determined by a new system based on capacity and performance rather than bureaucratic delays.
As part of ongoing reforms, the minister announced the development of new training manuals and the commencement of construction of a world-class Fire Academy designed to rival leading international institutions.
“The academy is being built to compete with leading international institutions, such as the Arizona Fire Academy,” he stated.
Highlighting the ministry’s focus on workforce well-being, Tunji-Ojo underscored the importance of mental health in the workplace and assured officers of continued government support in this area.
The minister further charged the Federal Fire Service (FFS) to seek private sector partnerships, stressing that collaboration was crucial for improving service delivery, modernising firefighting operations, and driving infrastructure development in Nigeria.
