Tinubu’ll Resolve ‘Grievances’ Fuelling Insecurity, Amb. Jimoh Ibrahim Tells UN As Guterres Receives New Envoy

Nigeria’s new Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Jimoh Ibrahim, has assured the global body that President Bola Tinubu was committed to addressing long-standing grievances fueling insecurity across the country.

Ibrahim made this known in New York while presenting his Letter of Credence to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, on Monday, where he conveyed the Nigerian leader’s message and reaffirmed the country’s resolve to tackle both domestic and global security challenges.

According to the envoy, Tinubu “remains committed to resolving long-standing grievances driving insecurity across the country,” stressing that Nigeria was taking deliberate steps to restore stability.

He also highlighted Africa’s growing relevance in global governance, renewing calls for a permanent African seat on the UN Security Council. Amb. Ibrahim argued that such representation would “strengthen collective security and reflect current global realities.”

The Permanent Representative noted that Nigeria would continue to mobilise international support to confront insecurity in the Sahel and the wider West African sub-region, adding that the country remained steadfast in advancing peace-building efforts across Africa.

On the economic front, Ibrahim pointed to key reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration, including fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate unification. He said tighter monetary policies were being implemented to curb inflation.

He further stated that “early indicators show progress,” citing improvements in debt sustainability and easing inflationary pressures, alongside sustained investments in infrastructure and the power sector.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s role in global diplomacy, Amb. Ibrahim said the country remained committed to multilateral cooperation, particularly in promoting peace in volatile regions such as the Strait of Hormuz. He assured the United Nations of Nigeria’s readiness to support global peace initiatives and diplomatic engagements.

Responding, UN Secretary-General Guterres welcomed Ibrahim’s appointment, describing his diplomatic role as “timely and important.” He added that the United Nations “is excited to work with him in advancing shared global goals.”

The UN chief also expressed confidence in strengthening cooperation between Nigeria and the global body through the new envoy’s tenure.
