Nigeria’s first lady, Remi Tinubu and environment minister Balarabe Abbas Lawal are expected to attend the inauguration of the Governing Council of the new Institute of Environmental Practitioners of Nigeria (IEPN) on Tuesday.
The IEPN was established after the IEPN Bill was signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari on May 26, 2023.
In a press release the president of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) Dr. Efegbidiki Okobia and that of Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON) Akpabio Essien, said the institute aims to promote professionalism, research, education and action to tackle pressing environmental challenges in Nigeria.
“The institute will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovative solutions to safeguard our planet’s health and resilience,” the statement said.
The IEPN Bill was first initiated by the NES in 1999 before being passed into law during the current leadership tenure of Okobia and Essien.
The inauguration of the IEPN Governing Council marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to professionalise the environmental sector and drive sustainable development across the country.
