The Association of Lagos Titled Chiefs, a non-political association of honorary chiefs and prominent members of the Lagos Community who have served the state and the nation meritoriously has decried increasing rate of traffic robberies in some parts of Lagos, saying it is rampant at the traffic light junctions on the Lagos Island.
The Association in a statement signed by the general secretary of the association, Chief Olawumi Gasper and released at its August meeting, appreciated the recent launching of a special operation code named “Operation Flush” to curb the high incidence of traffic robberies in Lagos metropolis with remarkable results.
The association attributed to the increased gridlocks either caused by extensive construction in the metropolis or obstructions by the “yellow buses” at bus stops and has pledged to support the Lagos State Police Command through amplifying its demands to the state government for a safer Lagos.
While commending the Lagos State Police Command for efforts being made to reduce crime rate, more particularly the introduction of “Operation Flush Initiative”, the Association said it is alarmed at the increase in the frequency of these attacks in the metropolis.
‘’The police seem helpless as traffic robbers continue to have a field day even in broad daylight, leaving motorists and commuters with harrowing tales of occupants robbed of their belongings,’’ they said.
The Association also called on Lagos residents for its cooperation in support of the Lagos Police Command by continuously reporting traffic robbery incidents and any other suspicious activities immediately at the nearest police station to help the command for better performance.
Noting that one of the most debated issues in the Lagos Public Space at the moment is the incidents of robberies in the traffic, attracting diverse suggestions on how to stem the increasing trend, the Lagos Titled Chiefs noted that the role of Lagos State Security Trust Fund in facilitating safety and security in the state and called on other private sector stakeholders to support in funding this security initiative.
