Vehicular movement along the busy Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja was brought to a near standstill on Saturday as thousands of delegates, supporters, and political stakeholders converged on the venue of the national convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

The massive turnout triggered severe traffic congestion that extended into adjoining roads and major intersections within the Central Area of the Federal Capital Territory, leaving many motorists stranded for hours.

Correspondents at the scene observed long queues of vehicles stretching across major access roads, while commuters and residents struggled to navigate the crowded area as political activities intensified around the convention ground.

Traders also took advantage of the large gathering, occupying road shoulders and open spaces around the venue to sell food, drinks, party souvenirs, and other items to supporters and guests attending the event.

Supporters of the Kwankwasiyya and Obidient movements were seen chanting solidarity songs, dancing, and waving party banners around the convention venue, further complicating movement within the area.

Security operatives were deployed to strategic points to manage the surging crowd and ease traffic congestion as the event gathered momentum.

The convention came amid heightened political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with the party taking a major decision expected to reshape opposition politics in the country.

During the convention, the NDC formally zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.

The resolution was adopted after delegates unanimously backed a motion moved by Afam Victor Ogene, the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly.

Political observers said the zoning arrangement is expected to strengthen the position of Peter Obi and other southern aspirants within the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the next presidential election.
