Transmission Company Engages Traditional Leaders Over Vandalism, Right-of-Way Encroachment

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reached out to traditional leaders in Kano State to address the growing threats of vandalism and right-of-way (RoW) encroachments on its power infrastructure. This collaboration aims to safeguard critical transmission lines essential for national electricity supply amid rising incidents across northern Nigeria.

The TCN, Kaduna Region, engaged traditional leaders in Mando and Rigasa communities through a series of sensitisation visits this month to combat vandalism and encroachment on transmission line Right-of-Way (RoW), general manager Public affairs, Ndidi Mbah, stated on Tuesday.

Mbah said that general manager (Transmission), Kaduna Region, Nasir Mansur Fada, who led the TCN delegation, said the engagements were aimed at strengthening collaboration with host communities and address growing safety risks from illegal developments under high-tension lines.
At the palace of Sarkin Mando, Alhaji Sani Musa, the TCN GM, raised serious concerns about the rising rate of encroachment on transmission corridors, noting that building houses, shops, and other structures directly beneath high-tension lines exposes residents to significant health and safety hazards, including electrocution risks.
He cautioned that individuals who deliberately encroach on designated RoW areas do so at their own risk, adding that TCN would not be liable for compensation in cases of electrical accidents, which could prove fatal if a line is cut.
Fada further warned that vandalism and RoW violations not only endanger lives but also undermine the stability and reliability of bulk electricity supply across the region and nation.
The sensitisation efforts followed similar meetings with the District Head of Rigasa, Arch. Aminu Mohammed Idris.
