The Kaduna State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal is set to deliver judgment in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the 2023 elections, Isah Ashiru, against the victory of Governor Uba Sani of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday.
Security had been beefed up around the premises of Kaduna State High Court venue of the Tribunal by a combined team of policemen, Department of State Security Service (DSS) and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
PDP is challenging the declaration of Governor Sani as the winner of the March 18 governorship election.
LEADERSHIP recalls that Sani polled a total of 730,001 votes to defeat his closest rival Ashiru of the PDP, who scored 719,196 votes.
PDP and Ashiru alleged that there were massive irregularities and manipulation of results in favour of Governor Sani in some local government areas by INEC.
According to them, Senator Sani did not score the highest number of valid votes cast in the election and ought not to have been returned and declared winner of the election by the INEC.
In June 2023, PDP and Ashiru, however, filed a petition at the Tribunal to challenge the election of Governor Sani.
PDP’s legal team led by Oluwole Iyamu, SAN, accused the INEC of manipulating the election results in favour of Sani.
The courtroom has been set up with provision made for transmission of the judgement proceeding via zoom.
LEADERSHIP recalls that last week, the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal similarly delivered its judgement via Zoom over security concerns.
