A European truck driver, Jakub Jan Konkel, has been sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison after United Kingdom authorities intercepted a multi-million-dollar illicit drug consignment concealed within a commercial cargo shipment.
The 40-year-old suspect was apprehended by UK Border Force officers at the Port of Harwich in Essex following his arrival on a ferry from the Netherlands.
A thorough search of the vehicle, which was transporting 28 legitimate pallets of American celebrity Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS clothing brand, led to the discovery of a sophisticated, custom-built hidden compartment within the trailer’s rear doors.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) confirmed that investigators recovered 90 kilogram-sized packages of cocaine from the vehicle, with an estimated street value of approximately $9.6 million.
Officials emphasised that the SKIMS clothing brand and its corporate entities were legitimate cargo components and were completely cleared of any involvement in or wrongdoing related to the smuggling operation.
“Organised crime groups use corrupt drivers like Konkel to move Class A drugs, often hidden on entirely legitimate loads such as this,” stated NCA Operations Manager Paul Orchard, noting that the interception successfully disrupted a significant criminal network.
Although Konkel initially denied knowledge of the contraband, he subsequently pleaded guilty to drug smuggling charges, admitting he had agreed to transport the illicit substance for a commercial fee of €4,500.
