President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could impose sweeping new tariffs on Chinese imports if Beijing is found to be offering military assistance to Iran amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.
The U.S. leader described the potential penalties as “staggering,” saying China could face a 50 per cent tariff on goods entering the American market if such support is confirmed.
Trump made the remarks during an interview on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, where he underscored his administration’s readiness to respond decisively to any foreign involvement that could escalate the war.
“If we catch them doing that, they get a 50 per cent tariff, which is a staggering amount,” he said, signaling a tough stance on both trade and security.
The warning highlights growing concerns in Washington over the possibility of deeper international involvement in the Middle East crisis, particularly from major global powers like China.
Meanwhile, Trump is expected to travel to Beijing next month for high-level discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as both nations navigate tensions tied to global security and economic relations.
The planned meeting was earlier postponed due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, but it is now seen as a critical opportunity to address rising geopolitical and trade concerns between the two countries.
