U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” as tensions between the United States and Canada escalate over trade.

Trump made the remark on Tuesday in a post on his Truth Social platform, saying the proposed name change was linked to deteriorating trade relations between the two countries.

“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer,” Trump wrote.

Lake Ontario is one of North America’s five Great Lakes and shares a border with the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York.

Reacting to the comment, Canada’s minister responsible for U.S. trade, Dominic LeBlanc, said the Canadian government would not engage with social media posts from members of the Trump administration.

“We’ve decided as a federal government months ago not to respond to sort of the daily social media posts of either the president or his cabinet secretaries,” LeBlanc said in an interview with CNBC.

Trump’s latest proposal comes after he previously changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” last year, a move that sparked controversy in Mexico and internationally.
