Saxophonist Oluwatosin Ajayi, known as TSAX, earlier this year once again showcased his exceptional skill with the saxophone and his command of contemporary jazz, funk and inspirational sound.
The combination of these three tracks showcases diversity through his instrumental EP, “High Altitude”. With only three tracks, TSAX delivers a project that is technically proficient, emotionally impactful, and intentionally made.
High Altitude sets a high standard with the opening track, “Encore.” In my own words, encore instantly conveys a feeling of upliftment and ambition, reflecting the imagery of elevation suggested by the title. TSAX’s sound is not just any kind of sound. What do i mean by this ? Let me explain; there are lots of saxophonists that try to make it to the limelight but their music isn’t just quality enough or not worth the listening pleasure of the audience. Music is art, and art is creativity with meaning. Here’s where i’m going with this, Encore is a meaninfully created track by TSAX with an indication of peak performance and expressive powers. “Encore” serves not just as an introduction but an introduction to greatness.
As a credible critique with many years of experience in arts and entertainment journalism, I have listened to this work of art by TSAX on several occassions. In my opinion, “Resonance,” Comes in a more rhythmically jazz appeal. For jazz lovers, this is a track you wouldn’t want to skip. The track has elements of swing, blues, and soul. Well, I’ll keep is that short. As a music lover, I find this track deeply resonating. The notes were carefully selected and adequate enough to fit into the style of the song. In “Resonance,” TSAX allows the saxophone to adopt an almost vocal quality, expressing feelings that words could never fully capture.
Lastly, “High Atitude” wraps up with “Amen (prayer without words),” a piece that resonates spiritually and highlights TSAX’s range and versatility. The trend I’ve noticed in this EP is how the tempo of the music slows down. Only a genius would start with funk and end with inspirational sounds. Despite that, this is a hard fit,TSAX finds a way to make this happen. Amen is a meditative and transcendent track that offers a thoughtful exploration that goes suppassing one particular genre, and serves as a musical blessing. Through its simplicity, the track conveys deep reflection and spiritual affirmation, capturing the emotional scene of the EP.
Here’s my summary, High Altitude for a fact is more than just an EP; it’s an experience. “Encore” lifts the listener with its cinematic funky style, “Resonance” is simply jazz, and “Amen (prayer without words)” Provides a moment for introspection and meditation. TSAX showcases a rare ability to blend technical skill with emotional depth, solidifying his reputation as one of the most captivating contemporary jazz artists you can ever come across. High Altitude is a brief yet profoundly satisfying work, highlighting TSAX’s growing influence and affirming its capabilities.
