UEFA announced Thursday that the highly anticipated Finalissima match between Argentina and Spain is still scheduled to take place in Qatar on March 27, despite escalating conflict in the Middle East.
The European football body stated, “At present, there are no alternative venues being considered,” for the clash between the reigning champions of South America and Europe. A final decision is expected by the end of next week.
The match, likely featuring stars Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal, is slated for Lusail Stadium, site of the 2022 World Cup final. Qatar’s close ties with UEFA, including Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al Khelaïfi’s presence on the UEFA executive committee, are evident as “Discussions are ongoing with the local organizers.”
However, the security situation remains fluid. Qatar’s football federation postponed all domestic tournaments and matches on Sunday following U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran. While Doha is the current plan, a move to Spain or another European venue is a possibility if security risks are deemed too high. The first Finalissima in 2022 saw Argentina defeat Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium.
