The Labour Party in the United Kingdom has suspended one of its Members of Parliament, Mike Amesbury, after a video surfaced showing him assaulting a man in the town of Frodsham.
The footage, published by Mail Online, showed Amesbury punching the man to the ground and continuing to strike him as onlookers shouted for him to stop.
The Labour Party, which assumed power in July, announced late Sunday that the 55-year-old MP had been suspended “pending an investigation.”
A party spokesperson stated, “Mike Amesbury MP has been assisting Cheshire Police with their inquiries” regarding the altercation. “As these inquiries are now ongoing, the Labour Party has administratively suspended Mr. Amesbury’s membership of the Labour Party pending an investigation.”
Cheshire Police confirmed that a 55-year-old man had voluntarily been interviewed under caution in connection with the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday. Authorities were called to reports of an attack in Frodsham and are conducting “further inquiries.”
In a personal statement, Amesbury, who represented a parliamentary seat in northwest England, acknowledged his involvement in the incident.
“I will cooperate with any inquiries but am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community,” he said.
The MP explained that he felt threatened after an evening out with friends, which led to the altercation. “I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during the incident,” he added, declining to make further public comment while the investigation was ongoing.
That was not the first time Amesbury has been at the center of a security-related issue. In July 2023, a 56-year-old man was convicted of stalking the MP at his constituency office in Frodsham, with prosecutors revealing that the stalker had been seen peering through windows and questioning security staff.
The Labour Party’s decision to suspend Amesbury came as the party sought to maintain its image of accountability and transparency following its rise to power earlier this year.
