The United Kingdom has reaffirmed support for Nigeria’s efforts at resolving the longstanding conflicts between farmers and herders which have contributed to insecurity and economic instability across the country.

At a strategic workshop organised by the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) in collaboration with the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) programme, UK officials underscored the importance of institutional reforms and sustainable peace initiatives in the livestock sector.

The event, aimed at reviewing FMLD’s five-year strategic plan, brought together representatives from federal ministries, peace commissions, academia, civil society and the international development community.

Discussions focused on strengthening mediation frameworks, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms and grievance management systems to address conflicts over land, water and grazing resources.

Speaking at the workshop, Magdalene Lagu, Head of Governance and Stability at the British High Commission in Abuja, highlighted the UK’s ongoing collaboration with Nigeria on security and development.

“The UK remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s economic growth and security. Through the UK-Nigeria security and defence partnerships, we will continue to support peacebuilding, stability and development efforts,” she said.

Minister of livestock development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, said insecurity in the livestock sector had hindered economic progress.

He reiterated the ministry’s dedication to address the challenges through policies that promote peace, security and social cohesion.

“This sector faces persistent conflicts that restrict access to vital resources such as land, water, and pastures. Our strategic plan prioritizes peace and security as key pillars for sustainable development,” he stated.

Team leader of the SPRiNG programme, Dr. Ukoha Ukiwo, described the workshop as a vital step in crafting effective interventions to mitigate conflict.

“The success of this workshop reflects the strong collaboration among stakeholders committed to peace and resilience in Nigeria’s livestock sector. We are confident that the outcomes will lead to practical and lasting solutions,” he said.
