The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, now Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the appointment of Mal Alkasim Musa Umar as the substantive Registrar and Dr Rose Lade Mommoh as the substantive University Librarian.

The appointments, which took effect from Friday, July 10, were approved by the Governing Council, under the chairmanship of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr Olanrewaju Tejuoso, at its 101st meeting.

This was contained in a press statement signed by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr Habib Yakoob, yesterday.

According to the statement, the Registrar and the University Librarian shall each serve a single term of five years, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act and the University’s governing regulations.

Congratulating the appointees, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, said he was confident in their ability to provide the leadership and professional expertise needed to strengthen the University’s administration and library system.

“The wealth of experience that these two appointees bring will further strengthen our commitment to excellence in teaching, learning, research, innovation and community service.

“Their appointments come at a critical time in our journey as we continue to reposition the University of Abuja as a globally competitive institution. I look forward to working closely with them as we realise the strategic vision of our great University and take the institution to even greater heights,” Fawehinmi said.

Alkasim Musa Umar holds a BSc and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Maiduguri, along with professional certifications from institutions including the Digital Bridge Institute and Souters, UK.

Umar has, at various times, served as Secretary or member of numerous University committees, including the University Undergraduate Admissions Committee, the Senate Committee on the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards, the University Portal Committee and the Vice-Chancellor’s Handing-Over Committee.
