Concerned members of the University of Maiduguri Alumni Association have issued a call for greater transparency and inclusivity in the association’s governance, urging the National Caretaker Committee to act swiftly to address these concerns.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the group emphasised the need for a “fair, transparent, and participatory approach” to maintaining the association’s credibility and legitimacy.

The members, who described themselves as committed to fostering an inclusive and democratic body, outlined several recommendations to enhance accountability.

The group called for the draft constitution to be distributed to all members for review and feedback, the establishment of official channels—such as email, an online portal, or designated representatives—for submitting comments, and the organisation of an inclusive Extra-Ordinary General Meeting (EGM) accessible to all members, either in person or virtually.

Additionally, they urged the committee to create an efficient system to document members’ contributions and publish a summary report of key decisions made at the EGM.

The statement also stressed the importance of regular constitutional review and governance process updates.

“A responsive and transparent process will strengthen trust and unity within our Alumni Association,” the statement read. “We remain committed to the enduring success of our University of Maiduguri Alumni Association and anticipate prompt action.”

The concerned members acknowledged the efforts of the Board of Trustees and the National Caretaker Committee in advancing the association’s objectives but maintained that further steps are necessary to enhance its legitimacy.

They also commended vice-chancellor Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele for his unwavering support in ensuring the association’s growth.

The group encouraged all members to sign and share their petitions to amplify their collective voice, emphasising that inclusivity in decision-making is critical to fostering a sense of ownership and ensuring the long-term success of the association.
