Union Applauds Return Of Peace In Birnin Gwari

After years of turmoil and insecurity that brought economic and social activities to a near standstill, the Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU) has announced that peace has been restored in the area, with incidents of killings and kidnappings reduced by over 95% since November 2024.

The union noted that farmlands once abandoned due to insecurity were now buzzing with activities as thousands of farmers have returned to their fields, while grain markets and livestock trading have rebounded to levels not seen in nearly a decade.

A statement by the chairman of BEPU, Dr Isah Muhammad yesterday praised the federal government for its renewed focus on Birnin Gwari, particularly the recent approval of three major road reconstruction projects by the Federal Executive Council.

Muhammad described President Tinubu as a “sincere friend and compassionate leader” who had fulfilled his campaign promise made during his visit to Birnin Gwari ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He equally lauded Governor Uba Sani for his “relentless pursuit of the public good,” particularly for initiating the development of a modern livestock market and abattoir in the area.

“The peace currently being enjoyed in Birnin Gwari is attributed to a comprehensive peace accord brokered between armed groups and the Kaduna State government, with strong backing from the federal government and community leaders. The agreement has led to a significant reduction in attacks and restored public confidence in the region’s safety.

“We are particularly grateful to the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu; Senator Ibrahim Buba; His Royal Highness, the Emir of Birnin Gwari, Malam Zubairu Jibril Maigwari II; and our dedicated religious and community leaders,” the union said.

It urged the federal government to establish a Federal University of Minerals and Forest Resources in Birnin Gwari, highlighting the area’s rich mineral deposits and vast forest reserves, saying such an institution would drive research and economic diversification.

The chairman also urged the relocation of the Federal College of Education and the Federal College of Forestry and Mechanisation to Birnin Gwari to improve educational access and bolster long-term peace and development.

On national security, BEPU advocated for the institutionalisation of non-kinetic approaches such as dialogue and community engagement.

It also called for similar peace-building efforts in neighbouring states of Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and Niger which continue to face security challenges.

He also expressed condolences to the people of Benue State following recent violent attacks, and the people of Mokwa, Niger State who were affected by catastrophic floods, adding that concerned  authorities should take urgent humanitarian and preventive action in these areas.
