Prominent basketball promoter, Mr. Igoche Mark, has issued a fervent plea for unity among Nigerian basketball stakeholders, urging them to put aside personal differences for the sport’s advancement. Mark, the brains behind the “Mark’D” Championship, believes internal strife is severely hampering the progress of Nigerian basketball.
Speaking on Arise TV’s Global Sports Program, Mark emphasised, “Currently, one of our biggest problems is internal fighting, lack of unity. A house divided against itself cannot stand. Nigeria basketball stakeholders need to come together and put aside personal agendas.”
Mark, who is committed to fostering this much-needed unity, highlighted the shared passion for basketball that should unite all involved. He stated, “No doubt, we all have something in common, which is passion for basketball, irrespective of our differences. This is me saying, let’s put aside all our differences and come together in one voice in order to advance the sport.” He further stressed the importance of establishing a robust structure for guidance and focusing on player development to bridge the gap between Nigeria’s international performance and its domestic league.
Calling for immediate dialogue, Mark pledged to spearhead efforts to bring stakeholders together, concluding, “Going forward, we need to talk, we need to start mending fences for basketball to make progress.”
His sentiments were echoed by other panellists, including Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Board Member and Olympian Olumide Oyedeji, and fellow basketball promoter Ugo Udueze, all agreeing that a unified approach is paramount for Nigerian basketball’s future. The consensus highlights the growing understanding that without collaboration, Nigerian basketball will struggle to achieve its full potential on both national and international stages.
