In a heartwarming gesture, students of Providence College in the United States have united to surprise their beloved security guard, James Magaji, with a long-awaited trip to Nigeria.

Magaji, who has not visited his family in over a decade, received a $3,000 travel gift, thanks to the generosity of the students living in Raymond Hall.

The initiative began when a student, Brandon Reichert, learned about Mogaji’s long absence from his family back in Nigeria and started a GoFundMe campaign on February 29.

“He truly is one of the nicest people you will ever meet,” Reichert shared. The campaign quickly surpassed its initial goal, allowing the students to present Mogaji with the $3,000 gift. A touching video of the moment has since gone viral.

The fundraising efforts, which have now ended, raised a total amount of $30,360. At the end of the school year, additional funds would be given to Mogaji to fund another trip to be taken in June.

On May 11, Brandon wrote on GoFundMe: “Good Evening Everyone,

“Today concludes the Providence College academic year. On behalf of James, I would like to thank each and every person that was involved with bringing the GoFundMe to life and everyone who contributed. James will be taking his trip to Nigeria in a few short weeks. He has already planned another trip when we are all home on Christmas Break. He has committed the remaining funds to bring his family to the United States. Again, I want to thank everyone who was involved with this fundraiser as you changed the life of one of the greatest human beings to grace this earth.”

James Magaji also sent a heartfelt letter to the students, expressing his gratitude and appreciation for their kindness and support. “Words alone cannot express how much I appreciate what you have done for me and my family,” he wrote. “Thank you all and continue to make a positive impact in the lives of everyone that comes across your path.”

Supportive messages poured in for both the students and James. Christopher Frey wrote, “Bravo to the generous and thoughtful PC students and best wishes to one and all.” Doris Delaine-Hill added, “Well deserved James, and much respect to the students who understand compassion. The future looks bright.”
