The United States Embassy in Abuja and the United States Consulate General in Lagos have announced they will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day.
The announcement was made in a notice posted on the US Mission’s official X account on Sunday, informing members of the public about the temporary suspension of services.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day,” the statement read.
The mission explained that Presidents’ Day was initially set aside to commemorate the birthday of George Washington, the first president of the United States. Over time, the holiday has evolved into a broader celebration honouring all American presidents and their contributions to the nation’s history.
It added that the day also recognises the impact of US Presidents on global affairs.
In a related message, the embassy noted that the late Washington established the “Badge of Military Merit,” which later became the Purple Heart, a decoration that still carries his image.
Presidents’ Day is observed annually on the third Monday of February as a federal holiday in the United States.
