Tax Reforms: You’re Peddling Propaganda, Presidency Tells Amaechi

The Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Olusegun Dada, has accused former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, of peddling propaganda and misinforming Nigerians about the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.

Dada, in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, described Amaechi as a “manipulator-in-chief” who has made it a habit to insult the intelligence of Nigerians since leaving office under the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

The presidential aide took particular aim at Amaechi’s claims about the tax reform Acts, accusing the former minister of spreading falsehoods about the provisions of the new legislation.

He said, “From mocking the poor people of Nigeria with his ‘I am hungry’ comments at the peak of the reforms, to blackmailing them to go on the streets to protest and now misinforming them on the tax reform acts, Amaechi has become notorious for insulting the intelligence of Nigerians.”

Setting the record straight, Dada outlined key provisions of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, which takes effect in January 2026, noting that the legislation sets progressive personal income tax rates ranging from zero per cent to 25 per cent.

He explained that low-income earners who make ₦800,000 or less annually would pay zero tax under the new law, while the 25 per cent top rate only applies to ultra-high incomes exceeding ₦50m to ₦100m annually, depending on the tax bands.

The presidential aide further dismissed claims that the tax reform would result in an automatic 25 per cent deduction from bank accounts or building material transactions, describing such assertions as desperate propaganda.

“No automatic 25 per cent grab from bank accounts or building material deals. Too many smart Nigerians are on board with these reforms and we have no doubts that they aren’t buying your desperate propaganda,” he stated.

Dada vowed that the presidency would continue to educate Nigerians on the reforms regardless of the political status of those spreading misinformation.

“Very quickly, we will bury retrogressive politics like these in the nearest future so we can focus, as a nation, on building a formidable economy that will compete among comity of nations,” he added.
