US-Israel War On Iran: Gulf Airspace Closures Hit Nigerian Routes

Travellers from Nigeria to the Middle East, particularly Dubai and Qatar, are facing major disruptions following widespread flight cancellations and delays triggered by escalating hostilities in the Gulf region.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Sunday announced that several flights from Nigerian airports to Middle East destinations had been cancelled or delayed due to airspace closures in parts of the region.

The disruption follows a wave of Iranian missile strikes across Gulf Arab states on Saturday, prompting authorities in the United Arab Emirates to suspend flight operations.

Dubai Airports confirmed that both Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) have suspended all flight operations indefinitely as a precautionary safety measure.

In a statement announcing the shutdown, the airport authorities said the decision was taken to prioritise passenger safety amid escalating regional hostilities.

“Dubai Airports confirms that all flight operations at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central, Al Maktoum International (DWC) are suspended until further notice. Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport at this time and to contact their respective airlines directly for the latest updates regarding their flights,” the statement read.

Reacting to the development, FAAN issued a travel advisory titled “Flight Disruption to the Middle East”, informing the travelling public that ongoing airspace closures are impacting flight operations to and from the region.

According to FAAN, flights operated by major international carriers, including Emirates and Qatar Airways, have been affected.

“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) wishes to inform the travelling public that ongoing airspace closures in parts of the Middle East are currently impacting flight operations to and from the region.

“As a result of these developments, flights destined for Middle East destinations from Nigerian airports, including Emirates and Qatar Airways, have been cancelled or delayed,” the advisory stated.

FAAN urged affected passengers to contact their respective airlines for up-to-date information regarding flight status, rebooking options and further guidance.

The authority added that it is closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with relevant aviation authorities and airline operators and will provide updates as necessary.

“We regret the inconvenience and appreciate the understanding and cooperation of the travelling public,” FAAN said.

Analysts note that while airspace closures are standard safety responses during missile or drone threats, the Middle East’s role as a global aviation crossroads means any shutdown quickly squeezes worldwide capacity and could push up fares if prolonged.

In a statement, Ethiopian Airlines confirmed it has cancelled flights to and from parts of the region due to the deteriorating security situation. Services to Amman, Tel Aviv, Dammam and Beirut have so far been suspended.

The airline said it is closely monitoring developments and will take further measures to ensure the safety of passengers and crew, urging travellers to check flight status through its digital channels or contact its customer service centre before heading to the airport.

As tensions persist, airlines continue to revise schedules by the hour, leaving global travellers bracing for further delays and uncertainty.

The development has left many travellers in uncertainty as regional tensions continue to disrupt international air travel across the Gulf corridor.

Within hours of the coordinated attacks, authorities in Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar either completely shut down or severely restricted their airspace, effectively sealing off one of the world’s most critical aviation corridors linking Europe, Asia and Africa.

The unprecedented and near-simultaneous airspace closures triggered immediate operational chaos across global aviation networks.

Airlines were forced to cancel scheduled departures, divert aircraft already en route, or suspend services altogether as airspace restrictions took effect with little warning.

The sudden lockdown sent shockwaves far beyond the conflict zone, stranding thousands of passengers across transit hubs and disrupting carefully synchronised long-haul connections.

Major international carriers, including Ethiopian Airlines, Lufthansa, Air France-KLM, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air India and EgyptAir, swiftly halted operations to key Middle East gateways such as Dubai, Doha, Tel Aviv and Baghdad. In several instances, aircraft already airborne were compelled to turn back mid-flight or divert to alternative airports as NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) signalled expanding no-fly zones.

At the height of the disruption, live tracking data from Flightradar24 showed dozens of aircraft either holding in the air, rerouting across narrow alternative corridors or grounded at departure airports awaiting clearance. Departures were temporarily halted at major Gulf hubs, triggering a ripple effect that cascaded into European, African and Asian airports as inbound aircraft failed to arrive and outbound crews exceeded regulated duty hours.

Airlines have since been forced to redraw global flight paths almost overnight. Carriers are rerouting long-haul aircraft through Pakistan, Central Asian airspace and Turkey, adding several hours to flight times on key intercontinental routes.

These detours significantly increase fuel burn, crew costs and maintenance cycles, while compressing already tight fleet schedules during peak travel demand.

Industry analysts warn that the squeeze on available airspace has tightened global capacity, particularly for airlines that rely heavily on Gulf hubs as east–west transit bridges.

Cargo operations have also been affected, with time-sensitive shipments facing delays and higher freight rates as aircraft availability tightens. The Middle East corridor is a vital artery for high-value goods, including electronics, pharmaceuticals and perishables, moving between Asia and Europe.

While international aviation safety protocols require immediate airspace closures when missile or drone threats escalate, the economic consequences are swift and far-reaching.

Prolonged restrictions could translate into higher ticket fares, delayed onward connections, insurance premium adjustments and mounting operational uncertainty for carriers and travellers alike.

For now, the Middle East’s strategic role as a bridge between Europe, Asia and North America has been sharply disrupted.

Gulf super-connector airlines, whose business models depend on seamless transfers across geographically central hubs, face mounting scheduling and revenue pressure if restrictions persist.

Until tensions ease and regional skies fully reopen, aviation stakeholders say the turbulence will likely continue to reverberate well beyond the immediate conflict zone, reshaping global flight patterns and testing the resilience of an industry already navigating geopolitical and economic headwinds.
