A professor of Electrical Power Systems  Engineering at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Mark Ndubuka Nwohu, has called for  the Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACT) for equitable power distribution as solution to Nigeria’s power problems.

He made the suggestion when he presented the 108th inaugural lecture of the university with the title; “Power System Instability, A Bane of  Industrialisation and Economic Growth  of A Nation: Nigeria As A Case Study” in Minna at the weekend.

He suggested proactive measures to  improve power supply by deploying advanced technology such as reconducting the transmission matrix or adopting Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACT) for equitable power distribution.

Nwohu said: “Electricity is pivotal in the economic growth of a nation and its industrialisation. Any disruption of the electricity supply adversely  affects the functionality of industries and the economic realities of that nation.”

He said power system instability is the  attribute of the system or part of the system which enables it not to be in equilibrium or balance.

He added that it has adverse effect on industrialisation and economic growth of a nation, noting that industries are the major users  of electricity, hence, its deficit would lead to many losses though with normal labour cost in industries.

The vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, lauded Prof. Nwohu for his insightful presentation and acknowledged his significant contributions to the electricity sector in Nigeria.
