Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) and Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi have warned newly admitted degree students to steer clear of drug abuse, sexual harassment, cultism, cybercrime and other social vices.
The warning was issued during the matriculation for 120 students admitted into the affiliated degree programmes of both institutions for the 2025/2026 academic session.
At the event yesterday, ATBU vice-chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Garba, stressed that both institutions maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward anti-social behaviour.
Represented by Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Bappa, chairman of the Central Admission Screening Committee, he cautioned that students who fail to comply with the rules and regulations governing campus life risk facing disciplinary measures, including expulsion.
According to him, the institutions are committed not only to imparting knowledge but also to shaping students into responsible and disciplined citizens.
“The oath you have taken today signifies your readiness to abide by the laws and statutes of the university, as well as your commitment to conduct yourselves with decorum throughout your stay,” he said.
He added that adequate academic facilities and welfare provisions have been put in place to support students’ learning, urging them to cooperate with the institutions in achieving their vision and mission.
Similarly, the rector of the Polytechnic, Sani Usman, reiterated that any student found engaging in misconduct would face sanctions ranging from suspension to outright expulsion.
Represented by his deputy, Dr. Dalhatu Sa’idu Abubakar, he urged the students to respect constituted authorities, including lecturers and administrative staff, and adhere strictly to institutional regulations.
The rector emphasised the need for students to focus on their studies, maintain regular attendance at lectures, actively participate in academic activities, and uphold values that reflect positively on both institutions.
“This institution is committed to maintaining a peaceful, disciplined, and academically conducive environment for all”, he stated.
