The management of Cosmopolitan University, Abuja is set to adopt a supercomputer cluster to process satellite data that can support agricultural practices and develop serious artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

Its vice-chancellor, Carl Adams, who spoke in Abuja at the weekend at the first matriculation of the institution said the process will also lead to the creation of other applications that require huge data storage and processing capabilities.

A total of 44 students were matriculated during the ceremony.
Adams said because supercomputers consume a lot of energy and produce heat that is not environmentally friendly, the university is designing its facilities to be zero-impact and carbon-neutral, using innovation from solar panels, heat exchange systems and thermo-electric generation.

The institution, according to him, also intends to provide summer schools to students at other universities in Nigeria and across the globe to give them access to its satellite data-cube, AI resources and supercomputer cluster.

He said in line with the ethos of the university, it will open up access to its performance computing resources to other universities in Nigeria and to the wider business and government organisations.

The vice-chancellor said the institution will collaborate with the Nigerian satellite industry by providing them with extra resources and capability to make it a community resource for the good of the country.
Professor Adams, who charged the matriculating students to take advantage of the facilities and teaching professionals of the institution, told them and the parents gathered at the ceremony that the vision is to create the best university in Nigeria and the world.

In addition, the vice-chancellor said three universities’ libraries in the United Kingdom have already solicited copies of books that were written by eight members of the staff of Cosmopolitan University, as he described the institution as the place that writes the books that other universities use.
Earlier, the chairman of the board of trustees of the university, Nu’uman Danbatta, said Cosmopolitan University stands as a beacon of knowledge and a place where minds co-habit to explore, question, and grow.

Danbatta said the commitment of the institution to excellence knows no bounds, stressing its dedication to providing its students with the highest quality education and equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in an ever-changing world.
Cosmopolitan University, Abuja was licensed by the federal government in May 2023 and got the nod of the National Universities Commission (NUC) to run programmes in 16 courses across 3 faculties.
It plans to start its law courses later this year, precisely in September 2024 by setting up a Faculty of Law.
