Nigeria’s Super Falcons clinched a narrow 1-0 victory against a resilient Botswana side in their second Group B match at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 in Morocco on Thursday.

The decisive moment came late in the game when Chiwendu Ihezuo found the back of the net, ensuring Nigeria’s ladies progression to the quarter-finals of the continental tournament.

The Super Falcons showcased their determination and skill, battling against a Botswana side that proved to be a significant challenge throughout the match. Despite dominating possession, Nigeria faced a disciplined defensive display from the Botswana players, making it difficult to convert their chances into goals. However, Ihezuo’s late strike brought relief and joy to the Nigerian camp, solidifying their status as a force to be reckoned with in African women football.

This victory marks a continuation of the Super Falcons’ strong record against Botswana at the WAFCON, having previously secured a 2-0 win over the same opponents in the 2022 edition. The team’s confidence is undoubtedly buoyed by this success as they look poised to carry that momentum into the knockout stages.

Ihezuo’s performance has been instrumental for the Super Falcons, as she has now scored in consecutive matches. She opened her account for the tournament with a goal in the earlier 3-0 triumph over Tunisia, highlighting her importance to the team as they aim for their 10th title in the tournament.

The Super Falcons will take on Algeria in their last match of group B on Sunday evening at the same Larbi Zaouli Stadium.
