The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOCSF), Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, has inaugurated a high-profile Editorial Committee to produce a landmark publication documenting the history and evolution of the Nigerian Civil Service.
The inauguration held at the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) in Abuja on Friday marked a significant effort to preserve institutional memory and enhance public understanding of the Service’s role in national development.
In her address, Walson-Jack described the forthcoming publication as a legacy document and national asset that will chronicle the transformative journey of the Federal Civil Service.
“This publication is not just a historical record but a vital policy resource that will guide reforms, inspire future public servants, and serve as a reference for researchers in public administration,” she stated.
She emphasised that the project aligns with the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2021–2025 (FCSSIP 25), which seeks to institutionalise excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
“The Civil Service remains the stabilising force in Nigeria’s governance architecture, adapting to emerging realities while upholding its apolitical and service-oriented mandate,” she added.
The Editorial Committee, composed of seasoned retired permanent secretaries, directors, and academic experts, is tasked with reviewing the draft manuscript for historical accuracy, contextual relevance, and editorial quality.
Key members include Dr. Habiba Lawal, (Chairman), Sir Olusegun Adekunle, Mr. Adesola Olusade and Prof. Yakubu Ochefu (Professor of History).
In her response, Dr. Habiba Lawal, represented by Sir Olusegun Adekunle, commended the initiative, noting that the Civil Service has been a non-partisan and resilient institution contributing to Nigeria’s development since the pre-colonial era.
The publication will feature contributions from all eleven living former Heads of the Civil Service, offering unique perspectives on reforms, challenges, and future aspirations.
It will trace the Service’s evolution from colonial administration to modern-day digital transformation efforts.
The book, when completed, will serve as an indispensable resource for policymakers, researchers, and public servants, reinforcing the Civil Service’s role as the backbone of Nigeria’s governance.
