Federal Government College (FGC) Warri plans to launch a Technology and Innovation Centre to mark its 60th anniversary.
The global president, Federal Government College Warri Old Student Association (FEGOCOWOSA), Dr Godwin Alo, made the disclosure at a press conference in Abuja in preparation for the school’s celebration of its diamond jubilee.
He said the centre is essential for preparing students for the 21st-Century global economy, hence support the federal government’s transition to Computer-Based Testing (CBT), aimed at equipping students with skills in STEM disciplines, including robotics, artificial intelligence, and programming with the aim at equipping students with skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, (STEM) disciplines, including robotics, artificial intelligence, and programming.”
Dr Alo noted that the school has established a three-billion-dollar Legacy Fund to support projects, including a World-Class Sports Complex and a Post-College Scholarship Endowment.
“The fund aims to promote physical and mental well-being and support outstanding graduates.” The Diamond Jubilee celebrations will be staged in three phases: Lagos, Abuja, and Warri,” Alo said.
Dr Alo urged alumni, stakeholders, and the public to support the Legacy Fund, emphasising its impact on national competitiveness.
Stressing that FGC Warri will continue to shape leaders and innovators, reinforcing its role as a STEM-ready institution contributing to Nigeria’s development.
For her part, the former chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service and the Central Planning Committee, Mrs Ifueko Omoigui Okauru, highlighted the centre’s alignment with national policies promoting STEM education and called on stakeholders to contribute to the Legacy Fund, emphasising its importance for human capital development.
“The centre aligns with federal policies promoting technical and engineering education, fostering early STEM engagement, and preparing students for tertiary institutions and the global innovation ecosystem,” she said.
The FCT Branch Chairman, Mr Sanmi Ajayi, stressed the need for coordination ahead of the Feb 5 event, ensuring a successful outcome.
He said, The association is working to keep committee members informed and aligned with the event’s importance.”
